Christmas 6 – Visit of the Shepherds: Jesus is here, come and see

In this series we’re going to meditate upon the most important events related to Jesus’s Nativity.

If it’s your first time here, go to the introduction series, where we show how to get the most of theses prayers.

This is the day when the Angels will sing to the shepherds:  “glory to God in the highest and on Earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
Glory to God, sing the spiritual world. And peace to you.
Today, we celebrate one of the most important milestones of our salvation. The baby Jesus came so you can go to heaven after your time here on Earth.
Please be aware that we don’t have to wait until then to be with him. Here is here now.
God manifested Himself to some Israelites from simple origin: shepherds. God started communicating the good news to the humble and simple. They were most likely waiting the coming of the Messiah.
So the angel of the Lord visited them with a joyful message:

Luke 2: 10-14

The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

The angel appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them. The shepherds had a glimpse of the spiritual world where the glory of the Lord shone. They saw an army of angels praising God after having received the news of Jesus’s birth.
It’s hard to imagine how these creatures look like and the perfect sound of the gloria sung by them. It is surely frightening because we are not used to see these things are we’re not ready to see God’s glory, even a small part of it, as the shepherds saw.
Do not be afraid I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
Emmanuel, God with us is born.
God is very close to us now.
He is with you now, and will be every day of your life and will take you to heaven. You will never be alone.

They hurried off to see what the angel told them. It should have been very exciting going to meet Jesus.
In their way they must have discussed  about the prophecies.

Luke 2: 15-16

When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.

Arriving on the top of the hill, it’s impressive, how everything the angel said makes sense.
They are going to see in a few moments, the Messiah, the king, the son of God. The idea of being in the presence of such a great personality is intimidating. But when they arrived, they saw the baby Jesus. It wasn’t intimidating, but peaceful.
This peace that comes from Jesus you can see in Mary and Joseph. Everybody is staring at the baby.
God had let you know about this baby’s birth. You understood how important it is and you are here to adore this baby. And this is the message from God send through His messengers:  peace to you favored by Him.
Glory to God in the highest and peace to us.

Resolution ideas / Resources

They saw everything that was told to them and they went back glorifying God too. When we glorify God, we are not the center of the world anymore, but God is. When we persevere in mental prayer, spending time with the Lord, we’re showing with acts that He is important to us. Don’t you want to make a resolution to learn more about mental prayer, and persevere in this practice?

Another good resolution would be to thank, and praise the Lord more often for everything He’s been doing to us, and for everything He is? Here is a good way to be aware of God’s presence in our lives: The Examen Prayer – Fr. Timothy Gallagher
