Christmas 2 – John the Baptist: the final preparation

In this series we’re going to meditate upon the most important events related to Jesus’s Nativity.

If it’s your first time here, go to the introduction series, where we show how to get the most out of theses prayers.

God started preparing the people centuries before Jesus’s birth, but John the Baptist came as a forerunner just before Jesus, to make ready a people to the Lord.

Catechism of the Catholic Church 523

“St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way. “Prophet of the Most High”, John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last. He inaugurates the Gospel, already from his mother’s womb welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being “the friend of the bridegroom”, whom he points out as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. Going before Jesus “in the spirit and power of Elijah”, John bears witness to Christ in his preaching, by his Baptism of conversion, and through his martyrdom.”

But God didn’t stop there, He comes after each one of us, to prepare us to what He has already implemented: His Kingdom.

That way, we will be able to govern the world with Him when we will be in heaven.

Well, the Kingdom of God in not fully achieved, but is already here. You are part of it. The Creator and King is here with you now.

All 4 Gospels talk about John, his birth was foretold in the old testament and we see that his life was a great sign of the coming of the long-awaited Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus himself will say that among men there had not been anyone greater than John the Baptist.

John was born in a very unusual circumstance, where his parents had him in their old age.

After a brief introduction, the Gospel of Luke begins with the  angel Gabriel announcing the news to Zechariah, John’s father.

In the verses 16 and 17, it tells us the mission of John’s life:

The angel Gabriel said to Zechariah:

He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb,

and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

to prepare a people fit for the Lord.”

This was John the Baptist’s mission: to prepare the people for the Lord.

We see that there is a right attitude to accept God’s ways. John will preach repentance and conversion of the heart.

Since we always need to be vigilant, for us, now is a very good opportunity to listen to John’s message: To be prepared to meet God we must repent of our sins and live the Gospel.

We need to reject and fight sin and know Jesus’s words, in order to follow Him, Otherwise we won’t be ready to receive the baby Jesus.

Luke 1: 16-17

He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb,

and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

to prepare a people fit for the Lord.”

John is only a few months older than jesus, the same way he will go right before Jesus in his life, opening the way.

Here is the reality of the sin: It separates us from the Lord.

Is 59: 1-2

Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear.

But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.

We won’t let anything separate us from you, Lord.
